1– Grapple at the Garden:

Following the success of last year's first-ever collegiate wrestling meet at Madison Square Garden, wrestling will return to the world's most famous arena, on Sunday December 1st, and this year Stony Brook is getting in on the action. The National Collegiate Wrestling Association will be on display when the Stony Brook Seawolves take on the Vikings of Westchester Community College. Stony Brook will be joined by the ranks of Army, Bloomsburg, Boston University, Cornell, Drexel, George Mason, Hofstra, Illinois, Maryland, Penn, Princeton and Rutgers.

"While Stony Brook is not a member of NCAA wrestling, it is still a great honor to be recognized on the same stage as these wrestling powerhouses, and is a great opportunity to promote the team, the school, the NCWA, and the sport," commented Head Coach Shaun Lally. The team hopes to bring a large contingent of fans to show support. Tickets to go on sale soon, stay tuned for more details!!

While the team still has room for improvement, Coach Lally hopes to prove the old adage, "Summer wrestling makes winter Champions."

2 – Stony Brook Wrestlers Spend Summer Sharpening Skills

While many of us view our summers as a chance to get a little R&R, for the Stony Brook wrestling team, the summer is just another opportunity to train. Many members of the Seawolves squad can be seen in the newly built, Campus Recreational Center, where they have been holding wrestling practices twice a week.

The summer gives the team a chance to prepare for their upcoming season without the stress of classes and other extracurricular commitments. The wrestling team also sent several wrestlers to the annualKen Lesser Memorial Summer Heat Wrestling Tournament, hosted by Hofstra University.

3 – Campus Recreation Surprises Seawolves Wrestling with Brand New Mats:

The Stony Brook wrestling team would like to thank Campus Recreation for their new wrestling mat. The mat was purchased from local wrestling supporters, TW Promotions. The mats will allow the team to host its first ever home match on Stony Brook campus. The purchase demonstrates Campus Recreation's continued commitment and confidence in the wrestling team. The new mat will see their first dose of action Saturday, November 2nd, when Stony Brook wrestlers will wrestle-off against each other for starting spots on lineup.

4 – Four Stony Brook wrestlers named to the NCWA and NWCA 2012-2013 All-Academic Team:

Four Stony Brook wrestlers were recognized by the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) as well as the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) as 2012-2013 All-Academic Team members. Those wrestlers are Bobby Beneventano (captain emeritus), Matt Frey (captain) Michael Downer, and Dylan Clay. The distinction is given to NCWA wrestlers who achieved academic excellence during the 2012-2013 season. Stony Brook was among a list of 12 elite schools that, when combined, contributed more than one-third (56) of the honorees, proving that Stony Brook is committed to excellence, both in the classroom as well as on the mat.

5 – Nationals Recap:

Five qualifying members of the Stony Brook wrestling team made the pilgrimage to Allen, Texas over the weekend to compete amongst seventy-seven teams for the NCWA National Championships. Wrestlers Scott Dunkirk (Freshman.), Kyle Folk-Freund (Junior), and Captains Mike Lloyd (Senior), Bobby Beneventano(Senior), and Mike Shimer(Junior) all fought their way through the NCWA Northeast Regional Tournament in New Hampshire on March 1st for the opportunity to compete for All-American status.  Heavyweight Juan Velazquez also qualified but was unable to attend the National Tournament. For senior Captains Bobby Beneventano and Mike Lloyd, this would be the last time they would step on the mat as Stony Brook Wrestlers.

Beneventano, wrestling at the 133lbs. weight class, led the Seawolves off to a good start, pinning Tim Naubert of Grand Valley State. Beneventano then lost a tough match to Dakota Thayer of California Baptist who went on to place third. He quickly bounced back in the consolation rounds where he won a close match against Kyle Moore of Central Washington. He was eventually stopped by Cooper Powell from Lindenwood University.

Mike Shimer, wrestling at the 149 lbs. weight class, received a bye in the first round following his runner-up finish at Conferences and then lost to Carter Augustn from Grand Valley State. Determined to fight his way back into the tournament, Shimer, went on to pin his opponent, Matt Lago from Penn State-Allegheny, after being down by 11 points, CONTINUED...

6 – Stony Brook makes strong debut at Regionals, qualifies 6 wrestlers for Nationals:

In the first year of competition, the Stony Brook Seawolves write one for the history books. At the NCWA Northeast Regional Tournament in New Hampshire, the team had six individual wrestlers qualify for the NCWA National Tournament, which is more than half of the 11 weight classes.

The National Championships will take place in Allen, Texas on March 14-16. Co-captain Mike Shimer was the runner up at 149 pounds and became the first ever National Qualifier in Stony Brook history by winning his semi-final matchup. Captain, Bobby Beneventano (133), and heavyweight, Juan Velasquez, both took third. Stony Brook also sported a trio of fifth-placers in freshman Scott Dunkirk (165), co-captain Mike Lloyd (197) and Junior Kyle Folk-Freund (235). Head Coach Shaun Lally, still in his first year as head coach of the team, led the Seawolves to a 6th place overall finish, ½ a point behind University of New Hampshire.

"A few injuries hurt us but overall it was still a very good showing. We are proud of what we have accomplished and on another positive note...we dominate the SUNY schools," commented Coach Lally. Indeed, the team finished as the top New York team in the region, placing ahead of SUNY's Albany, Cortland, and Cobleskill. Stony Brook Wrestling now looks ahead to nationals to see if they can cap off an impressive season by crowning their first ever All-American.
